General Dentistry at InnovaDent Dental Clinic

30th January 2023

The phrase ‘general dentistry’ can sound very vague to patients. So, we thought that this week’s blog topic should be a round-up of all the services encompassed by this term – a general dentistry guide in layman’s terms, explaining how these services would benefit you.

When we dentists talk about ‘general dentistry’, we’re referring to the bread and butter ‘essential’ services that patients need. Read on to find out:

–       How these treatments treat and prevent certain dental problems.

–       How we use certain technologies to diagnose you.

–       Why you should choose Innovadent as your dentist if you live in the East London area.

Emergency Dental Appointments

Knowing you have a dentist you can rely on in times of emergency can be a huge weight off your shoulders. Dental pain can be some of the hardest to endure, and we never want our patients to suffer a second more than they have to. Emergency dental appointments at Innovadent are usually same-day appointments, and we recommend contacting us as early as you can to secure your appointment. We aim to make sure the dental emergency is quickly diagnosed, and that you are sent away feeling calmer and pain-free.

Dental Bridges

Replacing missing teeth is something we do best (especially when implants are involved). Dental bridges can be either implant-supported or non-implant-supported, and are made up of crowns, which provide the chewing and smiling function you’ve been missing.

Dental Crowns

This brings us to crowns, which are used both as part of bridges and as a standalone treatment. Crowns make up bridges, but they can also be used as a standalone treatment to repair teeth that have suffered significant decay or damage. Crowns fit over the whole surface of a tooth like a cap, and here at Innovadent, we make them with highly durable materials, that mirror the appearance of real tooth enamel extremely convincingly.

Dental Hygiene

Unfortunately, a third of people in the U.K are yet to ever see a hygienist. Visiting the hygienist is actually as essential as seeing the dentist; during hygienist appointments, the accumulation of plaque and tartar is removed from your gum line. Even people with a really healthy lifestyle and diligent oral health care routine should be seeing the hygienist at least once a year, as plaque build up happens to everyone.

Dentures

Dentures are one of the most popular treatments for addressing the issue of missing teeth. But did you know that it’s possible to fit a set of dentures with the use of implants? The presence of implants in the jaw makes a remarkable difference to the way you will be able to chew your food and speak. Meanwhile, implant-retained dentures result in a more natural aesthetic result, as they’re screwed firmly in place to a connecting element called an abutment, as opposed to being reliant on suction like traditional dentures.

Dental Fillings

The dental filling is a really important part of a dentist’s arsenal: in many cases, a filling stops the spread of decay, and stops it from affecting neighbouring teeth. This early intervention with a filling significantly reduces the need to use more comprehensive treatment like a crown, which requires some of the damaged tooth to be completely removed. Here at Innovadent, we can offer both traditional amalgam fillings and aesthetic tooth-coloured fillings.

Tooth-coloured ‘white’ fillings are a great option for people who might be looking to replace a metal, dark-coloured filling with a composite filling that suits their natural tooth shade.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is one of the most important procedures we perform, as it can save a tooth from extraction. When a tooth becomes infected, the living tissues within it can begin to die. Without treatment, this can result in the infection spreading to other teeth.

Root canal is performed to remove the bad pulp, clean the root canal, and fill and seal the space. After the root canal is complete, your dentist will place a crown or other restoration to protect the tooth and improve its appearance. In many cases, when a tooth is infected, it can darken in shade, so a restoration like a crown is important not just for restorative purposes, but for cosmetic purposes too.

Tooth Extraction

The idea of having a tooth out might sounds daunting, but it’s actually a really routine process. What’s more, the equipment and techniques we use to do so are state-of-the-art, making the process gentle and comfortable. We might need to remove damaged teeth out if an infection has occurred, gum disease has caused a tooth to become loose, decay is extensive, or trauma has knocked the tooth partly loose or a significant portion of the tooth has been destroyed.

Tooth extractions are carried out in the best interests of your mouth and health. Other circumstances when we might need to remove a tooth is if you have crowded teeth, or if your wisdom teeth haven’t come through properly.

If you have had an essential tooth removed, we will recommend that you have it replaced as early as possible. This will ensure that problems related to tooth loss do not occur, such as:

–       Heightened risk of gum disease and decay.

–       Jawbone resorption.

–       Impaired chewing and speaking function.

–       Confidence issues related to the appearance of your smile.

We recommend dental implants if you are looking for the most durable solution for a missing tooth.
